(BaseballStL) -- The Cardinals will name David Bell to their coaching staff as assistant hitting coach, according to the Post-Dispatch.

The announcement is expected to come at the baseball winter meetings in Orlando within the next day. Bell will serve as the assistant under Cardinals hitting coach John Mabry. Bell played for the Cardinals from 1995 to 1997 and was a teammate of Mabry on those clubs.

Bell retired in 2006 after playing 12 seasons in the majors. He recently managed the Reds Triple-A farm team, and served as the Cubs third base coach.

The Cardinals’ opening came about when former assistant hitting coach Bengie Molina left St. Louis to join the Texas Rangers organization.
