(BaseballStL) -- It happens every year so it's not like this is the first time in history the designated hitter is going to cause some problems - or at the very least have an effect - on teams in the World Series. But this year it causes a little bit more of a stir than normal.
While the Cardinals are going to get Allen Craig back healthy he provides the ideal man hitting in the middle of the lineup. He's as good as anybody in baseball swinging the bat.
For the Red Sox? Their best hitter is their DH. David Ortiz. So when this series shifts to St. Louis in order to keep him in the lineup for his offense he will have to play a little bit of first base. But what does that do to Mike Napoli? He's their regular first baseman and wouldn't appear to have anywhere to go.
Translation: The Cardinals seem to have a much easier transition to the different rules than the Red Sox do.
"If it's going to affect anybody more I would think it's going to affect their guys because they play all year with the DH and then they're going to have to not do it," Matt Carpenter said. "For us, having not played with a DH and then getting to do it, especially with the situation we have with Allen Craig it's something that could definitely play to an advantage."
"That's the game. The National League doesn't have one," the Red Sox Dustin Pedroia said. "It's obviously tough for us because our DH (David Ortiz) is pretty good. We'll do the best we can when we get over to St. Louis. But when David (Ortiz) plays 1st base he's got good hands. He's actually really good over there."
If Craig had not come back healthy for this series - he's been out since mid-September with a foot injury - then it's possible someone like Shane Robinson would have to serve as the DH. Obviously, as good as Robinson's been, there's a huge difference in the look of the Cards lineup with Craig healthy compared to Craig not healthy.
"It feels great. It feels so good to be a ball player again," Craig said. "It's no fun being hurt and having to sit on the sidelines and watch the team but we have a good group and we've won a lot of games and that's been fun to watch but it feels good to go out there and hopefully contribute to some more wins."
