JUPITER, Fla. – TheMatt Carpenter
experiment at second base has been one of the key story lines the first few days of workouts at Cardinals Spring Training.
But the Cardinals plan to make sure he gets in his work at third base as well.
Carpenter, a corner infielder and outfielder, hopes to earn regular playing time at second base by beating out a group including Daniel Descalso and Pete Kozma. But in case he’s needed at third, the Cardinals plan to make sure he’s ready there also.
“Eventually he needs some work at third just to make sure he still feels comfortable over there,” said manager Mike Matheny. “We just kind of put a plan together of how much work do you need to still feel comfortable at third base. We have a plan in place but right now I want his best attention and best effort at second base because that’s where he needs it.”
Carpenter has looked impressive at second base in early workouts but has admitted multiple times that his progress can’t truly be judged until the games begin and runners start charging down on him during double play turns.
