FORT MYERS, Fla. -- Pitcher Pat Neshek announced this morning the birth of his son, Hoyt, amid a competitive spring training where he's attempting to make a crowded Cardinals bullpen.

The Cardinals not only don't expect him here full time from this point forward, they also expect him to be with his wife and son as much as necessary.

"We're just encouraging him to make sure he keeps taking care of business and make sure he's around (his family) as much as he needs to be," Mike Matheny said. "He's felt good (on the mound) and is trying to stay there on the professional side.  I think he has a real good perspective and it's important for him to be around (his family)."

Neshek did return this morning to get back in the pitching rhythm.

"He'll be throwing on the back fields in a game and then hopefully get back to his family really quickly.  We're not rushing him or putting a schedule on him where he feels like he has to do one thing or another," Matheny said.

The sidearm thrower has been extremely impressive in camp thus far by giving up just two runs in six innings.  He's also struck out seven.  Matheny reiterated this morning the importance of Neshek getting both righties and lefties out so he's not a second specialist in the bullpen alongside Randy Choate.
