(BaseballStL) -- Top prospect Oscar Taveras is inching closer and closer to being able to play in spring training games.
The highly touted outfielder ramped up his drills today at Hammond Stadium by running bases and sliding.
"He's right there," Mike Matheny said. "We're at that point where it's time to make a decision. We got to make sure he (passes) another couple things that he needs to pass."
Matheny adds that sliding could be the most important part of all the drills because that's how Taveras hurt himself in the first place last year in Memphis.
Prior to the rainout, it was possible he could have found himself entering Thursday's game for the first time in spring training, but the weather put an end to that notion.
