(BaseballStL) – Justin Masterson will make his fifth start as a Cardinal Sunday and by end of the afternoon the Redbirds could be sitting at the top of the NL Central.

With a win over the Phillies and a Milwaukee Brewers loss to the Pittsburgh Pirates, the Cards would take sole possession of first place with a little over a month left to play in the regular season. The Brewers have lost 7 of their last 12 games.

This will be Masterson’s third start and fifth appearance against the Phillies in his career.

Masterson continues to rebound after his horrendous start in Baltimore at the beginning of August, but the Cardinals have won his following two starts.

At the bat, Masterson has been a machine as he’s only one hit away from doubling his career total in hits with six total. Already this season with the Redbirds, Masterson has recorded his first run scored and RBI of his MLB career.

News and Notes

Oscar Taveras is riding a five game hitting streak and a .318 average in the last seven days.

With Saturday’s 12 inning victory, it was the Cardinals fifth win in August in which they scored the go ahead run their final at-bat. The last time the Cardinals had five in one month was September of 2011.

The Redbirds have scored four or more runs in the past 10 games. They have won 8 of those 10 games.

Jon Jay’s hitting streak came to an end at 12 games Friday night, but Jay has hit safely in 13 of his last 14 games and has the best average among NL hitters in August at .407.
