St. Louis Cardinals manager Mike Matheny (L) comments as General Manager John Mozeliak listens in after it is announced that the team's pitching ace Chris Carpenter will unlikely return to the rotation for the 2013 season, during a press conference at Busch Stadium in St. Louis on February 5, 2013. Carpenter, who has thrown for the Cardinals for 9 years, told Mozeliak that he is still in pain after missing most of the 2012 season following shoulder surgery and that does not belive he can continue to pitch. Mozeliak stopped short of announcing retirement but the team will go forward with or without Carpenter once the season begins. UPI/Bill Greenblatt

Tampa, Fla. - Cardinals manager Mike Matheny is out of surgery and doing well, according to general manager John Mozeliak and a tweet from Mike’s son Tate.

Matheny underwent back surgery Monday morning in St. Louis to remove a particle that had lodged against a nerve when he suffered a ruptured disc in his back. The Cardinals manager had been in severe pain for several days.

“As of now, he’s feeling great,” said Mozeliak. “What I think is important now is he has to take it slow over the next few weeks, probably for a month, but I do think he’s getting some relief from that procedure today.  So that’s very encouraging.  I hope to see him by the end of the week back in camp but know he’s going to have to be slow and smart about it.”

“God is good! Everything went well with my dads surgery he is done and doing well #blessed,” his son Tate, a freshman at Missouri State, tweeted around 10 a.m. CT on his Twitter handle @Tmatheny22.

Matheny’s daughter Katie also tweeted, “Everything went well with my dads surgery this morning..he is done and doing well! thank you for all your prayers! #Godisgood”

The second-year manager is expected to miss Monday and Tuesday’s games but return to Jupiter during the off day on Wednesday.
