ST. LOUIS (KMOV) -- Cardinals third baseman David Freese is headed to the 2012 All-Star Game.
Freese and Rangers rookie pitcher Yu Darvish won the NL and AL Final Votes and will represent their respective leagues in Tuesday’s All-Star Game in Kansas City.
Freese, the first Cardinals player to win the Final Vote, became the NL leader Tuesday after MLB announced Chipper Jones was replacing Matt Kemp on the NL roster.
Freese also led the voting heading into Thursday, but a late push of Twitter voting had Atlanta Braves outfielder Michael Bourn rapidly closing the gap.
It appears it was too little too late, though, as the 2011 World Series MVP’s lead in voting was too big a gap to close.
Finishing behind Freese in votes were Bourn, Nationals outfielder Bryce Harper and Diamondbacks second baseman Aaron Hill.
Freese heads into Thursday’s game against the Colorado Rockies with 50 RBIs, second among NL third basemen behind the Met’s All-Star David Wright. He also ranks second among all NL third baseman with 13 home runs.
