(BaseballStL) — The Cardinals look to inject some life into a listless offense in the final game of a nine-day home stand.

The stretch has been marred by subpar hitting, as the Birds have posted an average of .216 with 61 strikeouts over the previous eight games. The club has gone 2-6 during that stretch, falling five games behind division leader Milwaukee

“The bottom line is wins. When that doesn’t happen we start looking to what we individually can do better,” Mike Matheny said of the tough sledding for his team. “It takes a toll. We have some frustrated guys.”

With 20 scoreless innings staring back at the Cardinal lineup, frustration can certainly be understood. They were shut out in back-to-back home games for the first time in 22 years, and haven't produced more than four hits in the last three games.

James Shields will take the hill for the Royals, having won six games and struck out 69 in 80 innings.
