(BasbeallStL) -  If there's anyone who knows the rigors of playing catcher for a full 162-game Major League season it's Cardinals manager Mike Matheny.  And it's that knowledge that's leading him to trying to protect his own dynamic catcher.

Matheny announced this morning the Cards are going to ease All Star Yadier Molina into Grapefruit League action.  He won't appear in games for, quite possibly, several days.

"We'll probably go a little slow getting him started," Matheny said. "We got a long way to go and he looks good.  We talk about trying to conserve (innings behind the plate) and we could potentially do that right off the top."

"If you're going to do something it's better to do it in February or early March rather than in June or July," Matheny said.

One possibility could be to get Molina innings at first base so he could get at-bats without having to catch.  But the Cards manager said that's not something that has been discussed up to this point.
