(BaseballStL) — Game two with the Mets, set for a 90 degree game time temperature, will be a day off several Cardinals, and an opportunity for others.
Matt Carpenter, Kolten Wong and Matt Adams are all off against New York, with Daniel Descalso, Mark Ellis and Peter Bourjos getting a start.
Carpenter, who has played in all 70 games this season, will get a breather after a rough 0-for-4 Monday.
“Saw it for a couple days,” Mike Matheny said of his third baseman wearing down. “Yesterday it kind of came to a head mid game. I knew it was most likely going to be an opportunity to give him a day.”
Still, after playing 157 games last season and starting all but one this year, Carpenter didn’t take the day off without a touch of protest.
“He fought me a little bit and then I think he realized, all things considered, with a day game tomorrow, heat and him starting to grind a little bit, it made for a good day,” Matheny said.
All three lefties will be available off the bench, and given the right-handedness of the Mets bullpen, will have ample chances for a pinch hit.
Still, the Cardinals felt like there was no need to make a quick move to bolster the bench or bullpen.
“Because Seth (Maness), Carlos (Martinez) and Nick (Greenwood) did what they did, we have a pretty healthy pen right now,” Matheny said. “If we need to change that tomorrow, we have the ability to do that without making a quick move just to get us through today. We feel like we’re pretty well covered.”
Shane Robinson would be a prime call up candidate with Randal Grichuk having to spend 10 days in AAA before returning, and the Cardinals making sure Oscar Taveras gets regular time.
