JUPITER, Fla.—In desperate need of a seventh reliever out of the bullpen to begin the season, the Cardinals went ahead and signed right-handed reliever David Aardsma to a minor league deal this morning.

The 32-year old was released by the Indians late last week after going 1-0 with a 3.00 ERA in six Cactus League innings.  Aardsma was a non-roster invite to Cleveland’s camp.

Aardsma figures to make the Cardinals since he’s being added to big league camp just days before the team heads north from Florida.  Jorge Rondon, Scott McGregor and Keith Butler have all been vying for the Cards last spot in the bullpen but each has been less than stellar.

Rondon’s ERA is 0.00 but he has walked far too many for the Cards liking (five).  McGregor and Butler have been hit around far too much as well.

This spot in the rotation figures to just be a place holder until Jason Motte returns from injury so it’s not as if they expect to need Aardsma for long.
