(BaseballStL) — The Cardinals have kicked off the international signing period by signing four players from the Domincan Republic.
St. Louis picked up two pitchers in Junior Fernandez and Sebastian Nunez, both righties, and two infielders in Starlin Balbuena and Esequiel Delgado.
The only one of the four eligible to play immediately is Fernandez, who turned 17 in March. He has agreed to terms with the club and will start for the Cardinals’ Dominican Summer League team Saturday.
Balbuena, a shortstop, and second baseman Delgado are both 16 and signed for 2015. They, along with Nunez, will be subject to MLB Commissioner’s Office approval. Nunez did not turn 17 until mid-May, and so is subject to the same rules as Balbuena and Delgado.
