(Baseball StL) -- The Cardinals entered the day against the Mets with the best record in Major League baseball on the strength of 12 wins in their last 14 games. A four game sweep of a poor Mets team was there for the taking with Adam Wainwright on the mound.
Then, they go out and lose 5-2 at home.
“It’s tough to win four games in a row against the same team in the big leagues,” first baseman Allen Craig said. “It’s certainly possible but it’s hard to do. Those guys have good players. It’s not going to be like that every game.”
“It’s very hard (to sweep a team in a four game series),” manager Mike Matheny agreed. “I don’t think (there’s) enough acknowledgment of that fact. We were able to pull it off in Milwaukee against a good team. Any time you head into a big league game it’s hard enough to win on its own but to take four of them in a row is extremely difficult.”
The Cardinals actually had just gotten a four game sweep against the Brewers just a couple weeks ago. They’ve seen their record in relation to the .500 mark grow from plus-three to plus-twelve since the start of that series.
And, once again, it will be the Brewers whom the Cardinals will face starting tomorrow. This time they will play in St. Louis.
