JUPITER, Fla.—More than a couple weeks after holding a private workout for Cuban shortstop Aledmys Diaz at Roger Dean Stadium, the Cardinals announced his signing today to a Major League contract.
The 6’1 right-handed hitting middle infielder can also play second base but considering the depth the Cardinals currently have at that position (Kolten Wong and even Matt Carpenter) it would be unlikely Diaz’s value to the organization would be there.
“We have been following Aledmys for quite some time,” GM John Mozeliak said in a statement. “His signing marks a significant benchmark for the Cardinals in the international arena and we are excited to have reached this agreement.”
Diaz will report to the Cardinals big league camp tomorrow and be available to the media then. The Cards say they expect him to begin 2014 at the high levels of the minor leagues, possibly even AAA-Memphis.
