MILWAUKEE (BaseballStL) – After blowing a 2-0 lead in the ninth inning against the Cardinals on Monday night, the Brewers have decided to remove John Axford from his duties as closer, according to Rotoinfo MLB.

Monday’s 3-2 loss marked the sixth time this season that Axford had blown a save; he had blown just five save in the previous two seasons combined.

The Cardinals, who were 0-for-17 with runners on base heading into the ninth inning, tacked Axford for three runs on three hits and two walks in two-thirds of an inning.

Axford has a 2-6 record with a 5.35 ERA and 16 saves in 39 games this season.  Francisco Rodriguez will take over the role of closer.
