ST. LOUIS (BaseballStL) – Lance Berkman missed 47 games with a right knee injury he suffered in the last series against the Dodgers in May. Now he may miss more time after being taken out of Tuesday’s game when he was hit in the same knee by a pitch.
Berkman immediately fell to the ground at home plate after being hit by Clayton Kershaw’s 84 mph slider in the third inning. He talked his way into staying in the game while limping to first base with Mike Matheny and a trainer.
The veteran first baseman was pulled from the game after hobbling his way to second base following a single hit by Daniel Descalso; Matt Carpenter came in to replace Berkman.
Matheny told reporters following the game that the ball hit him right where he previously had knee surgery. Matheny referred to it as a "bad spot."
