JUPITER, Fla. – Yadier Molina is no longer the only Molina to wear a Cardinals uniform.

Older brother Bengie Molina, who spent 13 seasons as a big league catcher, has joined the Cardinals this year as their assistant hitting coach. And in his first few days on the job, he’s earned positive reviews.

“He’s doing a great job,” said manager Mike Matheny. “Right now he’s been focused a lot on the hitters but he’s been sharing his time with the catchers and he’s going to naturally gravitate that way. Even while he’s analyzing some of the pitchers we’re going to be facing, he’s going to breaking them down almost from a catcher’s perspective.

“He’s doing a lot of things that he does well naturally. I think it’s a good fit for him and he seems to be enjoying being out here and I know the guys have really taken to him.”

Bengie Molina hit .274 for the Angels, Blue Jays, Giants and Rangers.

He last played with Texas in 2010. He nearly signed with the Cardinals for the 2011 season to serve as Yadier’s backup but the deal fell through at the last minute.

The assistant hitting coach spends most of his time scouting the opposing teams pitchers before games and working with hitters in the batting cage and video room during games.

John Mabry enters his first season as the Cardinals hitting coach after serving in the assistant hitting coach role a season ago under Mark McGwire.
