(BaseballStL) -- Carlos Beltran will get a day of rest to open the series against the Cubs Friday.
The 36-year-old slugger will be replaced by Allen Craig in right field as Matt Adams steps in at first base.
In his pre-game chat, Mike Matheny said the move was in response to Beltran's fatigue.
"[It's the] normal aches and pains that he has day-to-day," Matheny said. "Yesterday and the day before both he was working hard and his legs weren't responding how he wanted them to."
Beltran is hitting .350 over his last 10 games, but went 0-for-4 in the series finale with the Dodgers.
David Freese will be moved up to the second spot in the order in place of Beltran.
"David's been swinging the bat well he's a guy that can get on base and drive in some runs if guys in the bottom of the order get on," said Matheny.
Freese has gone 12-for-35 in his last 10 games with a homer and seven RBIs.
