(Baseball StL) -- In the closing chapter of the much-talked-about bunting incident from Monday night's game, Carlos Beltran cleared up questions before Tuesday night's contest.
In the locker room before warm-ups, the Cardinals slugger explained it was his idea to bunt with men on first and second and no one out Monday when the Birds were down two runs.
"I think I did the right thing," he said. " I was thinking about what was right for the team." Fans were upset with the call following the one-run loss, despite the fact the sacrifice moved runners and ultimately resulted in a run.
Confusion followed when Mike Matheny would not clarify whether the dugout or Beltran made the decision to bunt in his post game conference.
Tuesday, Matheny- always a player's coach- expressed support for the decision.
"Once you start taking instincts away from guys, you're asking for trouble," he said.
The Cardinals continue what has been a rocky stretch against the red-hot Dodgers and ERA leader Clayton Kershaw Tuesday at Busch.
