(BaseballStL) – The long road back has finally reached its end for Allen Craig. Mike Matheny announced during his media session Tuesday the Cardinal first baseman, lost since September, will be on the roster for the World Series

“Allen ended up passing his last test today. He went out and ran the bases again and he’s hit live,” said Matheny. “We were anxious to have him back even though we felt very fortunate Matt Adams had been able to do what he’s been doing.”

Craig had hit live before Game 6 of the NLCS off the trio of Jaime Garcia, Jake Westbrook and Sam Freeman.

That session left everyone involved optimistic, and those expecting to see Craig on the field in Boston were proven correct.

Though he will be on the roster, Matheny said Tuesday Craig will be used solely at the plate during the outset of the series.

“Right now we feel comfortable with Allen as a DH. When we get back to St. Louis we’ll reevaluate but we anticipate him being able to pinch hit at least,” he said. “If he continues to progress and things start looking differently then we could make that change. But right now we’re happy with Matt Adams at first base.”

The Cardinals will maintain the same amount of pitchers on the roster, which resulted in Adron Chambers being bumped to make room for Craig.

If Crag is injured furing the World Series, the club would be able to replace him on the roster.

If Craig should re-injure his foot during the series, the Cardinals would be able to replace him on the roster
