JUPITER, Fla. – Matt Adams probably sees the writing on the wall, but that doesn’t appear to keep him from mashing at the plate.
Despite not appearing to have a spot on the big league roster, Adams had two hits and two RBI in the Cardinals’ 8-3 loss to the Miami Marlins in their spring training opener Saturday.
“I saw my name in the lineup card and I was just ready to play,” Adams said. “I felt good. I’ve been seeing the ball good in live BPs and saw the ball well today.”
Adams, 24, hit .329 with 18 home runs and 50 RBI in just 67 games for Triple-A Memphis last season. The first baseman earned a promotion to the big league club in late May and hit .244 with two home runs and 13 RBI in 27 games.
He’s one of the best prospects in the Cardinals organization but they don’t seem to have a spot for him on the big league club. The only position he currently plays is first base and Allen Craig doesn’t seem to be going anywhere anytime soon.
Asked about the predicament, Adams said, “I just have to go out there and play my best day in and day out and play the game the right way and keep trying to get better each day and get ready for the season.”
“Matt had a good day. He’s swinging the bat well, he has every time I’ve seen him off live and regular BP. He has a nice short swing working right now," manager Mike Matheny said.
“He’s gone about it just like he should, you don’t get caught up in that stuff. That’s a huge distraction that keeps you away from being who you can be. You just go out and play the game and let the other stuff take care of itself. Once you start playing junior GM your wasting your efforts."
Adams said the club has yet to ask him about possibly playing the outfield but “Whatever they throw my way I’m willing to try.” He then admitted that he has no prior outfield experience, “so I’m probably not going to see any out there.”
The left-handed hitting slugger could make the club as a power bat off the bench but he’d probably benefit more by playing every day in Memphis. His best opportunity to play in the big leagues might ultimately come in another organization.
