(BaseballStL) — The San Francisco Giants and their MLB-best record roll into St. Louis Thursday for a quartet of contests with the St. Louis Cardinals.

The Birds on the Bat will be a stick short against the white-hot Ryan Vogelsong in game one as Matt Adams will be out of the lineup for a second consecutive day.

The big lefty was sidelined in the finale with the Yankees with left calf tightness, appearing only as a pinch hitter in the bottom of the ninth.

Thursday he is benched once more, though Mike Matheny did not say team physicians saw any serious injury.

“He’s about the same as yesterday,” he said before the game. “They took a closer look today at him and we’re confident that we haven’t seen anything major there but enough that we have to cautious.”

Matheny also suggested the first baseman could be used as a pinch hitter again, and did not view the injury as something that would require time on the DL at this point.

Pitcher's Digest

Jaime Garcia takes the hill for his third start of the year. His return outing saw him go seven inning and take a no decision, but his second appearance brought him a win.

He’s surrendered 11 hits in 12.2 innings, but has struck out 12 and walked none since reappearing in the rotation.

Ryan Vogelsong started rough, giving up 25 hits and 14 runs in his first four starts while striking out 11 and walking eight. His ugly start culminated in absolute abuse at the hands of the Colorado Rockies, when he gave up five runs on three homers and didn’t make it out of the second inning. From that point on, he has been a different guy.

In his last six starts Vogelsong’s ERA is 1.35, striking out 35 hitters in 40 innings and allowing only six runs.
