ST. LOUIS, Mo. -- Sending Oscar Taveras back to Memphis may have been a surprising move on the Cardinals' part but it makes perfect sense. Taveras has been considered the Cardinals top prospect for two years now, and the club didn’t want to bring him up to St. Louis until he was ready to stay. But it looks like he’s not quite ready.

Taveras hit just .189 in 11 games with the Cardinals. He homered in his second at bat but hasn’t hit one out since. He has only two extra base hits in 37 at bats. On a club struggling for offense, that’s not good enough. If he was playing for a team that isn’t in contention (think Cubs here) he would no doubt be given more time to find his stroke. The Cardinals aren’t in position to be that patient. The Cards sit 5 ½ games behind the first place Brewers in the Central division. They can’t afford to fall any farther behind and find themselves playing for one of the wild card spots instead of the division title.

Matt Adams brings a .325 average back to the Cardinals line-up. He has to play every day. Allen Craig isn’t having his typical year, but he still leads the team with 33 rbi’s and he’s second on the club with six homeruns. He has to play every day, too.  Matt Holliday is not going anywhere either. There is no place to play Taveras on an every day basis. The Cardinals don’t think he can handle centerfield defensively so Oscar will have to go back to Memphis. There is no point putting a 21 year old player with his potential on the bench. He’ll be back, there’s no question about that. For now though, the Cardinals made the logical move of sending him down and playing Adams and Craig on an every day basis.
