(KMOV.com) – St. Louis Alderman Antonio French has opened up a store front on West Florissant Avenue aimed at registering people to vote.

More than 60 percent of the population in Ferguson is African American but the majority of the city council, and the mayor are white. French hopes to educate people about how to make effective change in the community.

“I think that’s where a lot of the problems happened in the last couple of weeks,” French said. “You had a lot of folks feeling like they didn’t have representation in their government. Nobody in their government had their backs and the government was too quick to go to war on its own citizens.”

In the last election in Ferguson, the percentage of African American turnout was in single digits.
