FERGUSON, Mo. (KMOV.com) – Missouri Highway Patrol Captain Ron Johnson is giving credit to a particular group of people who have joined the protestors in an attempt to keep the peace in Ferguson.
Johnson said the clergy members have had a calming effect on the crowd the last few nights. Police say members of the church placed themselves between protestors and tense police officers in an attempt to stop the violence from escalating.
“The clergy have been a great example of the strength of this community,” Johnson said in early morning press conference Thursday.
Johnson said the religious leaders have been able to connect to the younger people in a way he has not.
“I think the clergy have been a very important presence. Young people in this area are very much hurting,” said Rev. Cassandra Gould.
