Several railroad companies are banding together to try to stem the theft of metals sold off for scrap.
A task force including police with Burlington Northern, Santa Fe, CSX, Kansas City Southern, Norfolk Southern and Union Pacific railroads this week plans to scour Metro East scrap yards for stolen property.
Railroad special agents are sworn officers who can make arrests and seek charges against trespassers and others suspected of committing crimes on railway property.
Railroad items that apparently are proving valuable to thieves include metal tie plates, spikes and rail anchors.
