Sandbags finally removed in Clarksville

08/05/2008

Associated Press

With floodwaters finally receded, the sandbags are going down in Clarksville.

Volunteers joined with merchants on Monday to remove some of the thousands of sandbags that made up the makeshift levee that saved the small town's downtown area during the summer flooding along the Mississippi River. Temperatures near 100 degrees failed to slow the effort.

Now, the issue is what to do with the bags. If homeowners want the city to pay for the removal, they must move the bags off private property onto the side of the street. But because many of the homeowners are senior citizens, the mayor says volunteers are crucial in the removal process.
