The Army Corps of Engineers says minor flooding is possible in coming days downstream from Carlyle and Rend lakes in southern Illinois.
Rend Lake empties into the Big Muddy River on its way to the Mississippi River north of Cape Girardeau, Missouri.
Carlyle Lake's outflow goes into the Kaskaskia River, which empties into the Mississippi.
Corps spokesman Alan Dooley says water control experts monitor the lake levels closely and would work to adjust discharges if levels continue to rise.
He says the corps would work closely with emergency management officials to ensure public safety and minimize property damage.
