St. Louis (KMOV) – Sauce Magazine's Catherine Neville shows us where to find authentic Greek cuisine with a low-key atmosphere. She takes us to south St. Louis for this week's Sauce on the Street.
It's tough to call any type of ethnic cuisine found at a restaurant authentic, but at Apollonia owner Behar Mehmeti and Chef Sean Kerosella cook everything from scratch every day using Greek recipes that have been handed down.
If you want to sample the flavor of Greece, try the Mediterranean combination platter, it's full of recognizable favorites like mousakka and pasticho.
Apollonia offers favorites like the deluxe gyro, but take my advice and get the chicken saganaki. The rich, garlicky butter sauce is studded with tomatoes and onions.
And for those of you in the know, you have to ask for the lamb shank. It's an off-the-menu special and worth seeking out.
Save room for dessert. All of the desserts are made by hand, even the phyllo dough.
