St. Louis, MO (KMOV) – Across the country, cutting-edge pastry chefs are looking to their past for inspiration, and a chef right here in St. Louis has opened one of the best pastry shops with pastries inspired by his own childhood creations.

KMOV

The Veruca Bakeshop & Cafe located in Benton Park and right next door to Niche, features Chef Matthew Rice.

Rice is still acting as pastry chef at Niche, but this new venture is allowing him to offer sugar lovers even more.

This explains his deserts made for grownups yet designed to bring forth our inner child.

Take the chocolate snack cakes for instance that are dipped in rich dark chocolate and filled with homemade marshmallow fluff.

Cupcakes get an update at Veruca too -- flavors change often.

Look for sophisticated sweet/tangy combinations like vanilla cake with a key lime curd filling and passion fruit butter cream.

For a truly classic taste, try the Red Velvet Cake.

Very often, bakers will take shortcuts just make a chocolate cake with red food coloring.

Rice however says he doesn't take any shortcuts, because this is his grandmother's recipe.
