Sauce on the Street: Maya Cafe
10:22 PM CST on Thursday, January 25, 2007
(KMOV) -- Take a step inside Maya Cafe and you can't help but feel like you've stepped into a South American paradise.
(KMOV)
Chef Sorby calls this "macho flan"
For starters, how about the tortilla de cangrejo, also known as crab cakes.
The best part of this dish is the brined napolitos or cactus. It is served on top of chipotle cream sauce. But don't worry, there's not a lot of heat to the sauce, just a little bite.
Chef Bill Sorby takes great pride in his salsa fresche. It's made daily with a combination of secret spices, serrano peppers, tomatoes, and garlic.
The tacos de pescado are served with a healthy amount of guacamole, mixed greens and fried filet of sole on top of a tortilla.
Of course, one of the largest draws to Maya Cafe is the margarita. They use fresh squeezed limes, lemons and oranges mixed with top shelf tequila.
If you have the room, try the mocha cheesecake empanada. These are truly to die for, a chocolate lovers paradise.
There is also the flan, which Chef Sorby describes as "macho flan" with its deep dark caramel sauce.
Escape the winter blues and head south of the border to Maya Cafe in Maplewood.
