ALTON, Ill. (KMOV.com) – A woman has been hospitalized after police say she lost control of her vehicle and crashed through a guardrail in Alton Friday morning.
Police said emergency crews responded to the scene along Highway 140 near Crest Drive around 9 a.m.
According to authorities the driver lost control of her minivan and struck a guardrail. The van then rolled down an embankment into a large drainage ditch.
When authorities arrived, they found a woman conscious inside the van. She was airlifted to Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis. Officials said she suffered a head injury in the crash.
A man on the scene, who identified himself as the victim's brother, told News 4's Ray Preston in addition to the head injury, his sister suffered a broken leg. The man also stated the woman's four children were at school and she was alone in the minivan.
Police have not yet determined what caused the woman to lose control of her vehicle. No other vehicles were involved.
