(KMOV) – The Wellston City Council on Monday impeached a council member who was accused of assaulting a city resident last month.

The hearing and vote at the Wellston City Hall took less than an hour to impeach Helen Jackson. She is accused of assaulting a person during a council meeting last month.

Council members, who witnessed the scene last month, also heard testimony from witnesses.  They stated Jackson got up from the council table, went into the audience and grabbed a woman’s arm.

“There’s only two ways in life and that’s right and wrong and what happened was absolutely wrong,” Yvonne Hawkins, Wellston council member said.

Jackson, who is facing a third-degree assault charge, was not at the meeting.

News 4 attempted to reach Helen Jackson for a comment but a relative said she just wanted to be left alone.

Wellston’s mayor will now have to select a replacement for Jackson on the council.
