(KMOV) – Residents in Cahokia are telling News 4, thieves are stealing manhole covers and sewer grates faster than the city can replace them.

They believe this problem is becoming hazardous for everyone, including children playing in the area or people walking.

A resident put up a sign after a sewer grate near his house went missing nearly two years ago.

Another resident told News 4, he knows of at least four manholes that need replacing.

The Cahokia Mayor says the problem in their town is isolated and no greater than any other city.

He says replacements for the missing grates were ordered more than a week ago.

He added that as soon as the replacements arrive, they will be installed.
