(KMOV) – A proposal in the Missouri House could make casino chip loans legal on the gambling floor.

This is a proposal Missouri casinos have wanted for years, that if passed, would allow gamblers who pass a credit check to borrow money in exchange for chips to gamble with.

An anti-gambling activist calls this proposal an unbelievably horrible idea.

“The only people who are going to want this money are compulsive gamblers. Social gamblers who once or twice years are going to have their limits,” Jerry Prosapio told News 4’s Sharon Reed.

Prosapio runs a website called “Gambling Exposed” He helps compulsive gamblers and he says he had a problem, himself.

“I had a terrible casino gambling problem. If they had floated this idea to me, I would have signed up because I was desperate to get more money with which to gamble.“

Proponents say the change would help those casinos attract high-end players such as professional athletes.

Without the change, they say those gamblers will cross the river and gamble in Illinois where casinos are allowed to extent credit. Missouri could also lose tax dollars.

News 4 was not able to speak with the four area casinos on their thoughts on this proposal.
