Teen girl approached by suspicious SUV while walking from Fairview Heights school

FAIRVIEW HEIGHTS, Ill. (KMOV)  -- A 14-year-old girl told authorities  she was approached by a suspicious vehicle as she was leaving school in Fairview Heights Wednesday.

The girl told police she was leaving Pontiac School around 5 p.m. and was walking south in the 400 block of Joseph Drive when she noticed a red SUV approaching her.

The vehicle pulled up alongside the girl and a passenger asked her to get inside. She declined.

Authorities say the SUV continued to follow the girl before pulling into a driveway along Joseph Avenue.  

The girl took off running when she noticed an occupant of the vehicle was getting out of the SUV. She said she ran the rest of the way until she reached her home and had determined no one was following her.

She called police once she arrived at home at approximately 6:40 p.m.

Police say the girl reported four or five black men were inside the SUV. One passenger was described as in his early 20s and wearing a blue hoodie.  The driver of the SUV has been described as being in his 20s and wearing a black hoodie.

The girl said one of the passengers of the vehicle appeared to be around her age.

The school has released a surveillance photo of the vehicle that is believed to be involved in the incident. It is a red Dodge Magnum wagon or similar-style vehicle.

Investigators are actively searching for the vehicle and the men believed to have been inside during the incident.
