(KMOV) – A north St. Louis hotel worker is accused of stealing a gold chain and cross from a local bishop early last year.

Authorities charged Tifanie Mason, 26, with felony stealing after she was caught with a gold necklace and cross reported missing from an event at the Marriot Hotel near Lambert International Airport in March 2012.

Police say the bishop, who has not been identified, was attending a Knights of Columbus gathering at the hotel when he realized his gold chain and cross that he had placed on a table were missing.

Hotel security announced everyone working the event would be questioned. A co-worker told police she spotted Mason walking to her vehicle and carrying something wrapped in a towel.

Security officers searched her car in the hotel parking lot and found the missing items.

The items were estimated to be worth more than $2,500, but police say the personal value was much greater.

“The report, it’s reflected as a holy relic,” Edmundson Police Chief Col. Miklos Hurocy said of the necklace's value.

Mason, who has denied stealing the chain and cross, is being held in the St. Louis County Jail pending a trail.
