MOUND CITY, Mo. (AP) -- Members of the Missouri Highway Patrol are hopeful of finding the body of an officer who disappeared on duty during the summer's flooding in northwestern Missouri.

Water Patrol Division Trooper Fred Guthrie and his dog, Reed, disappeared Aug. 1 while working flood duty in Holt County. The dog's body and Guthrie's truck were later found near Big Lake, and cadaver dogs recently picked up a scent in the area.

Television station KQTV reports (http://bit.ly/u6fjaP ) troopers began searching Thursday in an area that was previously too wet to dig. The officers were using shovels and metal detectors to search an area about 150 yards wide and more than 300 yards long.

The Highway Patrol superintendent, Col. Ron Replogle (ruh-PLOH'-guhl), arrived at the site by helicopter around noon Thursday.
