ABUJA, Nigeria (AP) — Former British Prime Minister Tony Blair says he hopes peace negotiations between Israel and the Palestinians will resume in the coming weeks.

Blair says special U.S. Mideast envoy George Mitchell has made progress in attempting to resume negotiations between the two sides. He says it remains important for Palestinians to have a government with "credible institutions" that Israelis can negotiate with.

Blair made the comments Saturday during an interview with The Associated Press in Nigeria. Blair has served as the leader of the so-called Quartet of Mideast peacemakers comprising of the United States, the United Nations, the European Union and Russia since June 2007.
