AUSTIN, Texas -- An upcoming app could have the answer for anyone who has ever wondered, “this couch is nice, but how will it look in my living room?”

It’s one of many new tech toys being shown off at South by Southwest in Austin this week.

“Augment” for Android and Apple uses augmented reality to put 3D models of items in your living room (or wherever you point your tablet/phone at). You can even resize the item and rotate it, giving you an idea of how it would look in your home.

The app hopes to attract both online and traditional retailers, who will need to offer up the 3D models of their products.

A similar app called “Furnish” has been out for a few years. It has a similar method for online shopping, including furniture from Ikea.

Another augmented reality app making the rounds at SXSW 2013 is “MARS.” It lets you point your phone at any object, and it will try to identify it. It will even highlight windows on a building of importance – for instance, if a real estate agent wanted to spotlight the master bedroom in a home for sale.
