HARTFORD, CT (WFSB) - Connecticut Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro introduced a bill Wednesday to tax sugar-sweetened beverages.

Called the SWEET Act, the bill would impose a 1 cent federal tax per teaspoon of caloric sweetener, such as sugar or high-fructose corn syrup, that is put into beverages.

DeLauro says the bill is to help tackle the dual epidemic of obesity and diabetes in our nation.  "We are at a crucial tipping point and the SWEET Act will help correct the path we are currently on," she said.

Revenue raised by the tax of the SWEET Act would be used to fund prevention and treatment programs for those with obesity, diabetes and dental problems related to sugar-sweetened beverages.
