(KMOV) – News 4 has learned a new IRS scam is targeting residents.

A couple who lives in St. Charles said they received two calls from someone claiming to be from the IRS, threatening legal action. Both Gerald and Bonnie Kozak told News 4 they did not really believe the person on the other end of the line, but they were still concerned.

“You always think it could be legitimate,” Bonnie said. “When they talk about an IRS audit, you get concerned,” Gerald added.

Bonnie and Gerald said one call came from Seattle and the other came from someone who said his name was Frank Jefferson in Washington, D.C. News 4 called the Washington, D.C. number and spoke to someone named David who claimed to be Jefferson’s boss.

The IRS has repeatedly said it will not call someone with questions about taxes.
