St. Charles City Hall
(KMOV.com) – St. Charles officials said savings from another project will allow them to do more work on the parking garage near city hall.
Renovations on the garage began in March and were scheduled to end in August, but officials said the construction on a new firehouse on Boschertown Road came in under budget, which freed up money to money to replace the existing fire suppression system, something they said they had planned to do if the funds became available. Due to the extra work, the garage is not expected to re-open until September.
“With the garage closed, contractors can move in, demolish the existing system, and put in the new system. It is less complicated and will work out well for the city, said St. Charles Assistant Director of Public Works.
Some businesses owners told News 4 they were concerned work on the garage would eat into business because they thought city employees would use spots usually used by customers. However, the city offered a free shuttle to the boat house parking lot for city hall employees, freeing up the parking spaces for customers.
“We focused on making sure people parking on Main Street are in fact customers and not employees and police have been very helpful with that,” Sharlotte Worthington with the parking taskforce said.
City officials said some nearby businesses such as SSM Healthcare and ATT&T have loaned their some of their parking spots to the city until work on the garage is complete.
