Update: Lindenwood University said it has expelled Joanna Newberry.

(KMOV.com) -- St. Charles County Police have charged a woman with making a false report after allegedly telling police she was attacked in a Lindenwood University bathroom

St. Charles Prosecuting Attorney, Tim Lohmar, said Joanna Newberry, 21, told police she had been attacked in a bathroom at Butler Library on March 7. Newberry allegedly told authorities a male suspect threatened her and attempted to remove her clothing.

Lindenwood University issued an alert that was sent to over 12,000 students concerning an investigation into a reported sexual assault on campus.

On Tuesday, authorities said Newberry was interviewed by police and she admitted there was no assault and that she made up the story. Police said she did not give a reason as to why she made up the story.

Police charged Newberry with a misdemeanor count of making a false report. She could face up to six months in jail and up to a $500 fine.
