(KMOV.com) – GM announced it is in the process of expanding its plant in Wentzville Thursday.

In June, the company announced it would expand the plant and hire more workers. News 4 has learned new equipment is beginning to arrive, much of it 500.000 pounds at a time. In total, 6.5 million pounds will be shipped to Wentzville.

“They don’t just move these from plant to plant, location to location, this is an anchor for the Wentzville assembly center, but for years to come,” said Mike Bullock with the United Auto Workers (UAW).

Much of the equipment will be used in a stamping press to press metal into hoods, doors, and fenders.

“It’s going to greatly improve our flexibility in terms of the parts that we can produce here on site for the vehicle,” said plant manager Nancy Laubenthal.

Bullock said GM’s investment in the plant will have a ripple effect across Wentzville.

“You spend your money at mom and pop grocery stores, go out to eat somewhere in St. Charles County. It’s a great trickle effect,” Bullock said.

GM said the news stamping press is expected to be running by early 2015.
