(KMOV.com) -- Heavy rains and high winds swept across Illinois on Friday night, downing power lines and damaging buildings in Macoupin County.
A dispatcher at the Gillespie Police Department said late Friday officers were too busy to report on the effect of high winds in the town of about 3,400.
The dispatcher, who refused to identify herself, said high winds knocked down trees and power lines and caused damage to several buildings.
News 4 crews also confirmed that winds ripped the roof from the high school gymnasium. Several nearby homes were also damaged by the storms, which brought heavy rain and reports of tornadoes.
Gillespie is located about 50 miles northeast of St. Louis.
