FORT WORTH - A crowd waiting to buy sneakers outside Hulen Mall early Friday morning was doused with pepper spray after authorities received reports of fighting at the scene in Fort Worth.
Police were called to the mall as the group of shoppers grew outside, waiting for the mall doors to open. Authorities received reports that the crowd of about 200 was "getting out of control" and that several physical fights had broken out.
Upon arriving at the scene, several officers went to the front of the crowd, standing between the doors of the mall and the crowd. At one point, one of the officers yelled out a few words before dousing the shoppers with pepper spray. Several people were treated at the scene
The shoes, which sell for $185 to $325, went on sale for the first day Friday, spurring the long lines. Several stores inside the mall were selling the retro Air Jordans, which some shoppers said sold out in adult sizes not long after the mall opened.
The crowd began to form around 5 a.m., hours before the mall opened at 8 a.m.
There was no word on possible arrests.
