(KMOV) -- Several wrecks involving more than a dozen vehicles caused delays on three major St. Louis-area interstates Tuesday morning.
In south St. Louis County, southbound I-55 was shut down after at least six vehicles crashed on the Meramec River Bridge. Emergency crews removed one person from their vehicle and transported them to the hospital.
Traffic on SB I-55 was backed up for nearly three miles and drivers were being urged to use an alternate route.
Emergency vehicles were also blocking two northbound lanes, causing more traffic for drivers heading towards downtown St. Louis.
Interstate 270 northbound was also shut down at I-55 due to another multi-vehicle wreck. Drivers were being diverted onto Lindbergh Blvd.
A total of at least five vehicles were involved in two separate wrecks on Interstate 44 in west St. Louis County.
The Missouri Department of Transportation says the first accident happened on eastbound I-44 just before Highway 141. One right lane was closed.
Another wreck happened on I-44 as a result of the first one, causing a massive traffic back up.
Eastbound I-44 was initially closed, but traffic was getting by by about 7 a.m.
Officials say a third accident happened in the area on northbound Highway 141 just before Elam Rd. All northbound lanes were closed in the area.
