(KMOV) – More than a dozen residents were displaced after a raging fire swept through an East St. Louis apartment complex early Monday morning.
The fire broke out near the intersection of 12th and College some time before 3 a.m.
Crews responded to the scene and found the building engulfed in flames. Firefighters continued to battle the blaze throughout the morning hours, eventually getting it under control by about 6 a.m.
Officials say all 16 residents, many of them children, made it out safely.
One of the residents, Calvin Carter, lives with his wife and three kids in a first-floor apartment in the back of the building. He was just getting home from work when he saw the fiery scene.
“We lost everything. We just bought new furniture, all new TV’s, all new clothes, the whole house furnished,” Carter said. “We lost everything. We starting all the way over man.”
Red Cross volunteers were helping residents find a place to stay.
